WGN-TV has learned that a package containing radioactive sources has been lost during shipment this week from North Dakota to Tennessee, putting all FedEx facilities across the country on alert, including those in Chicago.

This is an excerpt from an incident report submitted by the U.S.Nuclear Regulatory Commission,

DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT: A PACKAGE CONTAINING SEALED GE-68 RADIOACTIVE SOURCES WAS SHIPPED FROM FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA TO KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE. DURING TRANSIT THE PACKAGE BECAME WET AND WHEN THE PACKAGE WAS DELIVERED IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT A BOX CONTAINING 4 GE-68 SEALED SOURCES TOTALING 684 MBQ AS REPORTED BY THE RECIPIENT WAS MISSING. THERE WERE TWO OTHER CONTAINERS OF GE-68 IN THE PACKAGE WHICH WERE RECEIVED.

A spokesperson from Federal Express told WGN that there should not be any threat to public safety, as long as the package is not tampered with.

Among those agencies notified of the incident by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission include the CDC, the FBI, the EPA, and the Department of Homeland Security.
