According to http://www.vote-smart.org/, Obama voted against the Patriot Act renewal in December 2005, saying it went too far. (Speech)
He voted for renewal in March 2006… they don’t have any speeches posted to say what changed in that time.
I found this page to be pretty interesting.
Time Frame
That big hoopla was about the extension of the patriot act. I have to look at the bill number. H. R. 3199.
