Omaha won’t host U.S. swim trials in 2012

Sorry, Omaha. If you were looking forward to another round of swim trials in 2012, you’re out of luck.

Omaha won’t host both the College World Series and U.S. Olympic Trials again in 2012.

The difference this time was the need for similar June dates. The Qwest Center Omaha grounds and local hotels could not handle any sort of overlap in schedules.

Following the Beijing Olympics, swim coaches met and selected June 17 to 24 as ideal dates for the 2012 U.S. Trials. The 2012 CWS is scheduled for June 16 through 27 or 28. USA Swimming agreed to start the Trials four days earlier, and the Omaha Sports Commission asked the NCAA to start a week later, but the organization won’t budge.

“We’re extremely disappointed because we really wanted to come back to Omaha,” said Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming. “We wanted to come back because it not only was an awesome event, but we got rave reviews from our athletes and coaches, and they wanted to come back.”

Wielgus said USA Swimming would begin a request for proposals from other cities after Jan. 1.

We build a new stadium for them, and this is the ‘respect’ we get from them.  SHOULD have just let them leave.
