Quotes from the World for Thursday 12/19/MXIII

Education is the point at which we decide whether we love our children enough not to expel them from our world and leave them to their own devices, not to strike from their hands their chance of undertaking something new—but to prepare them in advance for the task of renewing a common world.

Did you know that they can’t turn your OPPD off on a weekend? Yeah that was shocking news to me, it can’t be that hard to write a program. It isn’t like they actually have to come out and do it or anything. The meters are also wireless in this area now.

So I packed the linen closet, still have my sleeping bag, air pumps, and winter tires in there. That stuff wouldn’t fit in the boxes I had, if you have some boxes let me know. You can drop them off at the old address and then we’ll go from there.

Quotes from the World for Wednesday 12/18/MXIII

There are two kinds of truth; the truth that lights the way and the truth that warms the heart. The first of these is science, and the second is art…. Without art science would be as useless as a pair of high forceps in the hands of a plumber. Without science art would become a crude mess of folklore and emotional quackery.

Quotes from the World for Tuesday 12/17/MXIII

My own opinion is that [love] is felt most completely in marriage, or some comparable attachment of long duration. Love takes time. What are called “love affairs” may afford a wide, and in retrospect, illuminating variety of emotions; not only fierce satisfactions and swooning delights, but the horrors of jealousy and the desperation of parting attend them; the hangover from one of these emotional riots may be long and dreadful. But rarely have the pleasures of love an opportunity to manifest themselves in such riots of passion. Love affairs are for emotional sprinters; the pleasures of love are for the emotional marathoners.
