4,486 Homeless children

The latest survey on the homeless population reports the number homeless children in Nebraska stands at 4,486.

And less than 25 percent of them will finish high school.

That’s according to the latest report by the National Center on Family Homelessness.

“Education is the key to getting out of poverty,” said Candace Gregory, CEO and President of Omaha’s Open Door Mission.

In an effort to break the cycle of impoverishment, Omaha’s Open Door Mission has programs for parents and kids to become literate, get back to school and seek higher education.

Tonight the Mission held a celebration highlighting its education effort for children in families of need.

The Mission recognized 36 shelter children for their academic success. Three shelter children made the honor roll.

The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates homeless children are fours times as likely to drop out of school.
________

Hopefully one day the kids & everyone(who wants one) will have a home.
