Marshall Goal Rescues Mavs in Overtime, 2-1
Bryan Marshall
Bryan Marshall batted in a rebound 29 seconds into overtime to give the Mavericks a 2-1 win over Ohio State to clinch home ice in the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.

The extra-session win, in front of 7,864 at Omaha Civic Auditorium and a national television audience over CSTV, ended a 17-game winless stretch in overtime for UNO. The last overtime win for the Mavs was a 3-2 victory over Yale on Dec. 31, 2005 and, coincidentally, Marshall scored that game-winner as well.

The Mavericks, now 14-14-8 overall and 11-11-4 in the CCHA, end the regular season next weekend when they play a two-game series at Alaska in Fairbanks. Ohio State, which clinched home ice Friday night with a 4-3 win over UNO, fell to 13-14-5 and 11-11-4.

Dan Knapp sent the puck to Alex Nikiforuk, whose shot was rejected by Ohio State goaltender Joseph Palmer, but Marshall, stationed just outside the left of the crease, flipped the puck over the goalie for his 10th of the season.

Nikiforuk got UNO on the board quickly, scoring his 12th of the year on passes from Scott Parse and Brent Kisio just 22 seconds after the opening face off.

The Buckeyes tied the game with a power play goal at 13:00 of the second on Mathieu Beaudoin’s 11th of the year. Matt Waddell and Jason DeSantis had assists.

The best-of-three first round of the playoffs will be on March 2-4 at Qwest Center Omaha.
